Two paths to recovery

November 19, 2017 By David Palmer 1 Comment

Let’s say you or a family member has a drug problem, and you want to deal with it. Where do you begin? Do you need to call a treatment facility? How much will it cost? What other options do you have? After you spend your money on recovery, will it work? Let me tell you first what I did without going to a treatment facility and then, in much more detail, what my old friend, Ron, did at the BridgeWay hospital in Little Rock many years ago.   David’s Story In 1979 I … [Read more...]

Teenagers and addiction

November 16, 2017 By David Palmer Leave a Comment

"This morning was one of those mornings. You know, one of those mornings where the sunrise is just right, where the crisp air brings lungs alive, and where the overall silence magnifies each creaking branch and each leaf scratching the street." This is how Steve Straessle, principal of Catholic High School in Little Rock began an article he sent me several years ago which I published in my One Day at a Time newspaper (now a website) a few years ago. Alcoholics Anonymous-how it works

November 9, 2017 By David Palmer Leave a Comment

I went to my first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting on a snowy December night in Boulder, Colorado in 1979—thirty eight years ago. My life was transformed. In his best seller, The Road Less Traveled, psychiatrist Scott Peck called the creation of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935 “perhaps the greatest event of the twentieth century.” Today, well over one hundred thousand AA groups operate around the world, with an estimated 2 million members. In Little Rock, AR, where I live, there are over four … [Read more...]

Beating opioids-A modest proposal

November 4, 2017 By David Palmer Leave a Comment

An attractive well-dressed woman walks into Starbucks, orders a Latte, removes her Armani sunglasses and takes a seat. Several patrons look up from their laptops or newspapers casually speculating about who she might be and why she is there. Maybe she’s a professional woman on the way to a client meeting or a Junior Leaguer out for some shopping or a soccer mom on a coffee break. Or, on the other hand, maybe she’s a prescription drug addict. Bingo! Actually, she’s a recovering drug addict. … [Read more...]

The War on drugs escalates

October 28, 2017 By David Palmer Leave a Comment

It’s official. Like his predecessors, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, President Donald Trump has declared war on drugs. In his call to arms last week, the President  noted that there are an estimated two million Americans who are addicted to drugs and 175 deaths a day. President Trump also held fast to his belief in the need for a wall to help keep drugs from Mexico from flowing into the United States. He also announced that we would cut off the supply of the killer drug Fentanyl from … [Read more...]
